Now, she's working her way through a nationwide tour that includes appearances at Woodford Folk Festival and Queenscliff Music Festival.

You'd be forgiven if you haven't heard of the sub-genre 'oceanic blues' before – Karen is somewhat of a pioneer, coining the term herself. “I sing a type of music, oceanic blues, which is more a collage of influences. You know, this heavily American style soul/ blues music, but there's also my Polynesian heritage as well as Australian [background].

"It's more about 'owning it' over this side of the world. That expression is a way for me to connect with listeners. It's a way of saying 'I'm not just one thing'.

“There's a lot of history behind soul and blues music, and to be honest it's not my history. I'm heavily influenced by African American music. Their music and who they are as people – they've given so much joy to the world despite their own oppression. That's their history, and I feel like I don't carry that weight. It's important to identify that. Hopefully, I can be respectful in trying to adapt to their musical style.” finish reading....

By Geoff Jenke - Eventalaide

First up Karen Lee Andrews hit the stage with her guitar and with bass player Adam Ventoura and Adelaide’s own Yanya Boston behind the drums. Now I have to admit I did not know this lady before this evening, but boy am I going to change that after this performance. Karen has a powerful soul & blues voice and she can certainly play guitar. Troubled Mind from her 2018 E.P Far From Paradise had the hair on the back of my neck standing up and then I’ll Wait, a song inspired by her father, who she hasn’t seen for 15 years was a pure delight. She dedicated a song to Yanya’s mother “who is in the audience and it’s her birthday so let’s sing happy birthday”. The music was vibrant, warm and lush and yes, she can rock when needed. The trio delivered the blues perfectly.

Fingers crossed that this opportunity raises her profile so she can return to Adelaide in the future. Karen’s set featured her brand new EP Far From Paradise which is well worth a listen.

Karen Lee Andrews opened the night's proceedings and what a fabulous start it was. Based in Sydney she was a finalist in the second season of the voice back in 2013 (AKA Ms Murphy) and has grown beautifully as an artist since then. She has a deep richness to her voice and was damn fine on the guitar, accompanied by a drummer and bass player she gave us a 30-minute set packed with heartfelt tunes full of emotion. One that stood out particularly was Love You which you can find on her latest album Far From Paradise. Please seek out this talented young lady, you will be glad you did.

Karen Lee Andrews @ Jimmy Barnes Tour, Hordern Pavilion, Sydney NSW

By Trudy Johnson - Wall of Sound

Warming the stage tonight was the deep soulful voice of Karen Lee Andrews, aka Miss Murphy for anyone that watches The Voice. Karen captivated the small audience with her storytelling in her songs and had written a heartfelt song for her father that she hasn’t seen in 15 years. Karen playing the guitar while she sang, was accompanied by a talented drummer and bass player; apologies for not catching their names. Karen was humble in her deliverance and very enjoyable to listen to.

Jennifer Perkins - Gigs2U

“I didn’t play any music, do any gigs, I completely put down my instruments and didn’t want to do anything. I was definitely disillusioned with somethings and had to take the time to reflect and understand what had just happened.”

For those of you who don’t know Andrews, you might know her as Ms Murphy. She shot to fame after appearing on The Voice in 2013 and winning audiences over with her huge and smoky voice. She didn’t win but she was a finalist, and with that came a record deal, connections, fame. Something that Lee was not necessarily prepared for, or perhaps even suited to.

“Being with a label, sometimes you feel pressured, especially when there’s money involved. That feeling of needing to deliver something, almost on demand, was a little bit too much.”

Karen Lee Andrews hits this road from May-September 2019 for her “Oceanic Blues Tour”.

Karen Lee Andrews has reconnected with her guitar, hitting new strides and a new style, which can only be described as, Oceanic Blues. And now this commanding woman of soul is back with her own original music and her EP “Far From Paradise” to set stages alight. The depths of her voice unlimited, she is already a fast festival favourite.

Oceanic Blues is the newest sub-genre of the Blues. Oceania’s narrative tradition and the introduction of American Blues, Soul and Gospel since the 1960s, has shaped this distinctive style. The roots of the sound are gritty guitar, glowing valves, lush tremolo and deep reverb in a distinctively fluid Oceanic expression. This sound carries the mood and tones of Oceania expressed in rich, warm vocal tones.

Andrews mostly tours as a formidable trio, teaming up with Yanya Boston on drums and Adam Ventura on bass – two exceptional musicians. Each musician is outstanding in his or her own right, but the dynamic of the group is exhilarating to witness! The trio delivers a classic hard-hitting blues rock. On occasion, Andrews performs with a full band, which includes Shannon Stitt on keys and Rawhiti Turnbull on lead guitar.

Feel the Real Thing - Karen Lee Andrews

Author: Davidson – Meerkatz Music

In recent times, Andrews has been touring as a formidable trio, teaming up with Yanya Boston on drums and Adam Ventura on bass— two of Australia's exceptional musicians. Each musician is outstanding in his or her own right, but the dynamic of the group is exhilarating to witness! The trio brings a classic hard-hitting blues-rock flavour, resembling the time when modern music was in its heyday.

The strange thing is that you would expect an act like this to be filling up stadiums rather than touring small venues. This notion adds to the nostalgic feeling of going to a small New York venue and paying a few bucks to see some of the most prolific artists before they were famous.

On the odd occasion, Andrews performs with a full band, which includes Shannon Sitt on keys and Rawhiti Turnbull on lead guitar, two excellent musicians. Andrews says the keys allow her to engage a more tender side enabling her to introduce blues ballads that showcase her powerful and emotive vocals.

The Aussie music scene suggests that people have become accustomed to the glut of amateur music out there and prefer to inoculate themselves with Netflix. However, when you live the rare music experience of Karen Lee Andrews, you feel the power of music as it should be. It is physical and phycological, and every part of your body says amen!

Karen Lee Andrewstag:www.karenleeandrews.com,2005:Post/52584732019-02-08T20:55:00+11:002019-11-06T20:53:04+11:00A story yet to be written... Oceanic Blues

Oceanic Blues

Iconic music. Iconic artists.

When you think of Texas Blues, you think of Stevie Ray Vaughan or Chicago Blues, Buddy Guy or John Lee Hooker, the king of Detroit Blues. Every branch of Blues is inspired by a city or region and is embodied by an iconic artist who captures the soul of the music.

The spirit of the Blues. The Blue Pacific.

Oceanic Blues is the newest subgenre of the Blues. Oceania’s narrative tradition and the introduction of American Blues, Soul and Gospel since the 1960s, has shaped this distinctive style. The roots of the sound is gritty guitar, glowing valves, lush tremolo and deep reverb in a distinctively fluid Oceanic expression. This unique sound carries the mood and tones of Oceana expressed in rich, warm vocals.

A culture of storytelling has a new story to share.

The wave of American music that impacted the region in the 1960’s coincided an upsurge of migration to American and Australian cities as 1 in 5 Islanders far from home, working endless hours to support their families back home add their unique flavour to the Blues.

When the Blues meets the Pacific, a new wave is born.

Oceania describes the thousands of islands that are scattered throughout the Pacific Ocean, spanning from Australia across to the south, as far as Hawaii. The region is best known for its warm tropical climate, an abundance of beaches, active volcanoes and coastal living. Oceania is steeped in ancient customs of oratory, dance and music, passed down from generation to generation. Each island is unique, while their close ties have created shared values.

A story yet to be written...

What began in the American South will take full root halfway across the world as the impact of the blues knows no bounds.
Karen Lee Andrewstag:www.karenleeandrews.com,2005:Post/55533962018-12-14T15:18:59+11:002019-05-30T12:38:52+10:00Sydney Residency

Author Lauren - Sounds of Oz

Critics of The Voice like to say the reality show hasn’t produced any stars. Perhaps if you take that to mean artists selling truckloads, it’s true. The singers from The Voice certainly don’t have the profiles of Australian Idol’sGuy Sebastian, Shannon Noll, Jess Mauboy, or Anthony Callea. Personally, I take a different view of stardom. While fame is exciting, true stars shine simply because they’re doing something fabulous. When you consider that definition, Karen Lee Andrews, better known to The Voice audience as Miss Murphy, is the genuine article.

Of course, The Voice didn’t make Ms Murphy shine so bright. Her talents were already in her. But they gave her a platform to showcase them. Surely they helped open the doors that see her releasing her latest EP Far From Paradise.

What a collection of songs this is. Soulful and bluesy, with so much heart and pain. They feel like instant classics, delivered with so much class.
Opening track “Love You” eases us into a more soulful space, with its earnest declarations and easy groove. “Troubled Mind” is a delicate soul piece which shows the power of restraint. It’s driven by pure emotion and Karen’s powerful voice, which slays each and every time.

After the tenderness of the first two tracks, the dark swampiness of “Going Down” is like a bolt from the blue. If you thought Karen Lee was all sweetness and light, this is the track that dispels the notion. The EP is rounded out by an extended version of “Higher,” an earlier upbeat release which feels right at home here.

What a talent Karen Lee Andrews is. Hopefully, she won’t leave us waiting too long for a full-length album. Far From Paradise is a stellar EP, but it leaves me wanting more.

See Karen Lee Andrews performing at Blues on Broadbeach, the country’s largest free music festival, from May 17 to 20.

Karen Lee Andrews (fka Ms Murphy) has a vocal tone that is undeniably powerful and from the first listen we knew we had to share her music with the rest of the world. Her new single "Higher" displays her spirited style of music making. The upbeat, feel-good track is nothing but pure expression of pure energy and relief.Built on engulfing guitar arrangements, snappy drums and a thick bass line to tie things up, the lush production results in a cinematic, vintage sounding and captures a time before now. Karen, on the other hand, rides the wave of the soundscape given to her delivering an intense filled, celebratory vibe that would make you want to turn it up really loud in traffic after a hard day at work.

With two successful albums, a national tour and of course nationwide exposure under her belt, Karen Lee Andrews is on the verge of releasing her new Ep entitled 'Far from paradise'. Capitalizing on her powerhouse voice and soulful sound, the new EP mines the rich blues and soul at the heart of her musical heritage. “The sound is new, yet familiar,” says Karen Lee Andrews, who has focused on reconnecting with her roots since stepping away from touring in 2015. Picking up her guitar in the Summer of 2016 was the catalyst for this fresh new sound. ‘Higher’ is a standout track amongst the EP, with Karen Lee Andrews’ powerhouse voice lending richness and depth to the track.

It’s hard to believe it’s been five years since we first met Miss Murphy on The Voice. Since then the season two standout has shrugged off her moniker and started releasing music under her own name, Karen Lee Andrews.

The name might be unfamiliar right now, but her soulful voice is unmistakable. I wish I could share her new track “Higher,” the first from her new EP Far From Paradise, with you in its entirety because it’s such a great track. It’s got a classic soul meets blues meets rock feel that makes me think of Janis Joplin, albeit with a smoother, huskier delivery. See what I mean in this song snippet.
